The Importance of Community: Why We Need Connection as Adults

Susan has just moved to a new city for a job opportunity. While it’s an exciting new adventure for her, she suddenly feels the weight of being alone; no family or friends live nearby. As the weeks pass, she notices that she’s been staying indoors more often than not, tucking herself away from the outside world. She craves connection, but she’s unsure of how, or where to start. 

How can I find my people? A community that shares my passions, my lifestyle, and my dreams for the future?

Daniel’s recently suffered an accident that’s left him housebound for longer than he’d like. However, he’s feeling optimistic. Every day it seems like a family member, friend, or neighbor drops in, whether to bring him a ready-to-bake meal, to help him with some part of his recovery, or just to sit and chat awhile. We need people to turn to for advice, who we reach out to when we’re feeling hopeless, or who we know will just listen patiently. From the earliest days of humanity, having a community has been essential for survival, growth, and happiness.

The Benefits of Community

Today, the importance of community remains as important as ever, especially for adults navigating the complexities of modern life. Establishing a strong community in our lives provides us:

  • Emotional Support: Perhaps most importantly, a community offers us a support system where we can share our joys and sorrows. When our emotions are validated and we feel emotionally supported, we’re less likely to feel alone or depressed.

  • Shared Resources and Knowledge: Communities pool resources, knowledge, and skills, creating beautiful shared experiences that can lead to personal and collective growth. Whether it’s sharing a meal, offering career advice, or lending a hand in times of need, the benefits of building a strong community are immeasurable.

  • Sense of Belonging: Being part of a community gives us a sense of identity and belonging, which grows into a sense of purpose and connection. Community reassures us that we are not alone.

  • Safety and Security: Back in the day, communities provided physical safety and security. Today, communities offer a safer space where we can express ourselves without fear of judgment.

Common Struggles We Encounter When We Don’t Have Community

When we as adults lack a sense of community, several struggles often arise:

  • Isolation and Loneliness: Without a community, we can feel isolated, leading to loneliness and, in severe cases, issues like depression and anxiety.

  • Lack of Support: Let’s face it: confronting life’s challenges without a support system can be downright overwhelming. Without friends or family to lean on, even small problems can feel insurmountable.

  • Decreased Well-Being: Studies have shown that social isolation can lead to various health issues, including a weakened immune system, increased inflammation, and higher risks of chronic diseases.

  • Limited Growth: We grow both personally and professionally when we interact and form relationships with others. Without a community, these opportunities are fewer and farther between.

  • Build Emotional Resilience: Therapy helps you build emotional resilience, allowing you to navigate challenging interactions without becoming overwhelmed. This resilience is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships and avoiding the pitfalls of avoidance or isolation.

How to Build and Maintain Community

It may be difficult, but as seen above, it’s vital we form strong, healthy communities. Here are a few ways to try and build your own community:

  1. Join Local Groups and Activities: Whether it's a yoga class, board game club, or book club, joining local groups with shared interests is a great way to meet new people and form connections.

  2. Volunteer: Volunteering for local causes not only helps others but also introduces you to like-minded individuals who share your passion for making a difference.

  3. Attend Community Events: Local events, such as farmers' markets, festivals, and artist markets, are perfect opportunities to meet neighbors and engage with your community.

  4. Use Social Media, But Mindfully: While social media can sometimes create superficial connections, it can also be a powerful tool for building community. Platforms like Meetup, Facebook Groups, and Nextdoor can help you find and join communities that share your interests and values.

  5. Be Proactive in Socializing: Be the one to invite neighbors for coffee, organize potlucks, or plan group outings. Sometimes, all it takes is a little effort to start building meaningful connections.

  6. Practice Active Listening and Empathy: Building a community requires genuine interest and empathy towards others. Be mindful when connecting with others; actively listen and show empathy. When you do this, you create a space where people feel valued and understood.

The need for community is deeply ingrained in our very being. As adults, finding and maintaining a sense of community can be challenging, but the benefits far outweigh the effort. A strong community enriches our lives, providing support, shared experiences, and a sense of belonging. By taking active steps to connect with others, we can combat the isolation and struggles that come with modern life, fostering a richer, more fulfilling existence.
