How to Look for a Good Therapist

Lori is nervous as she scans the smiling faces staring back at her on the screen. As she scrolls, she wonders if choosing the right therapist is a decision too important and too daunting for her. What if she doesn’t find someone she’ll click with? There are so many options and so many different qualifications! How could she possibly know who could help her?

Does this feel familiar? If so, please know you’re not alone and that this article is for you!

First off, take a moment to give yourself a pat on the back. Going from thinking about starting therapy to starting to research therapists and types of therapy for mental health is a big step forward. I want you to know that I recognize how hard this can be and that I’m proud of you.

Secondly, I want you to get excited about choosing a therapist! This is a chance for you to personally grow, heal, and find the emotional well-being that you deserve. I know searching for the right therapist can be scary, but with this list of key qualities and factors to consider when searching for the right person to support you, you’ll be well on your way to healing and happiness.

How to Find the Right Therapist for You

1. Look for a therapist who has qualifications and experience in your concerns.

One of the first things you should consider when looking for a therapist is their credentials. A qualified therapist should have a relevant degree, professional licensing, and certifications in their area of expertise (those areas of expertise should be what you’re looking for help with.) For example, if you’re struggling with anxiety, relationship challenges, or life transitions, make sure they have relevant experience and training in those areas.

2. Does that therapist specialize in what you’re looking to get help for?

Each therapist has unique areas of specialization (even if they don’t advertise it, you should ask!). For example, if you're dealing with specific challenges like trauma or grief, seek out a therapist whose niche is in those areas. A therapist who specializes in certain mental health concerns can often provide deeper insights and more tailored interventions.

3. Ask about their therapeutic approaches.

Therapists use different therapeutic modalities, or tools and techniques to help improve your mental and emotional wellbeing. Common approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based approaches, or psychodynamic therapy. Take a bit of time to research different therapeutic modalities and consider what might work best for you. Don’t hesitate to ask potential therapists about their approach and how it aligns with your goals.

4. Make sure they take time to establish trust. Do you feel comfortable with them?

Feeling comfortable and safer with your therapist is perhaps one of the most important factors for success in therapy. Of course, trust isn’t always established right away, but you should feel heard and understood, without judgment. In your first few sessions, notice how you feel around them. Do they listen actively? Are they approachable? Do you feel respected?

5. Is your therapist culturally competent?

Your therapist should have an understanding of, and respect for, your cultural background, identity, values, and life experiences. Cultural competence ensures that your therapist can provide effective and empathetic care without imposing their own biases or assumptions. You can check to see if your prospective therapist is a part of Inclusive Therapists (although keep in mind, not all affirming and inclusive therapists are included in that directory.)

6. Check your therapist’s availability and accessibility.

Consistency in therapy is key to making progress. It’s not helpful if you and your prospective therapist's schedules are opposite. Look for someone whose availability works for you and consider whether they offer online therapy or are strictly in-person.

7. Is there clear communication?

A good therapist should be able to clearly communicate their approach, boundaries, confidentiality policies, and the process of therapy itself. It’s important to feel that you understand the roadmap of your therapeutic journey.

8. Last, but not least, consider cost and insurance compatibility.

Yes, therapy can sometimes be costly, but it is truly an investment in your well-being. Having said that, it’s essential to find a therapist whose services fit within your budget (as we all understand that finances can put even more stress on us.) Make sure to ask about session fees, sliding scale options, and whether they accept your insurance.
